CSCI-UA 480 'Open Source Software Development', Spring 2025
This week we watched some more presentations by other groups, and finally got a couple of our PRs merged.
This week we gave our presentation on preswald, and I made progress on my personal contribution to jolpica.
This week we worked on our upcoming presentation on preswald, and also talked about open source in business
This week we looked into the concept of the cathedral and the bazaar (and the coffehouse).
This week, we watched a presentation by a NYU grad student who told us about his experience with open source software, and we also worked on our group project
This week, we explored famous figures in the world of open source and watched a presentation by Nick Vidal of the Open Source Initiative.
This week we split into teams and chose an open source project to work on together called Preswald.
My small contributions so far have been low-code and fairly simple, I’ve mainly been exploring and getting used to how collaboration and open source works.
This week we worked together in groups to look into the specifics of several open source projects. The open source project my team worked on was called Whiskey, as I had put that down as a project i was interested in (and possibly could contribute to).
This we week we learned a bit more about git. I have used this tool before many times but never really had a formal lesson on how to use it. I didn’t realise how powerful it was because all I really had been doing was pushing to and cloning from my personal github so i could share it with other people. I had never really taken advantage of branches and viewing file history. I look forward to using this newfound knowledge to be a better developer in the future.
This week I worked together with a couple of my classmates to make a firefox browser extension project. We first got to know each other and shared our interests and hobbies.
This week, we split off into groups and discussed the concept of a ‘code of ethics’ for a open source project.
This is my first blog post for my open source software development class, and I’m really excited to update this blog weekly for the spring2025 semester with all the progress I am going to make!
